What Is a Stock Portfolio Calculator?

A stock portfolio calculator helps investors estimate the value and performance of multiple stock holdings in one place.

Instead of calculating each stock separately, a portfolio calculator combines your holdings to show your total invested capital, current portfolio value, profit or loss and return on investment.

It can also help you understand how much of your portfolio is concentrated in individual stocks.

How to Use the Stock Portfolio Calculator

  1. Enter a portfolio name.
  2. Select your preferred currency.
  3. Enter the stock ticker or symbol.
  4. Enter the number of shares you own.
  5. Enter the purchase price per share.
  6. Enter the current market price per share.
  7. Add additional holdings when necessary.
  8. Click Calculate Portfolio.

The calculator combines the individual holdings and produces portfolio-level results.

Stock Portfolio Calculation Formulas

Investment Amount

Investment = Number of Shares ร— Purchase Price

Current Holding Value

Current Value = Number of Shares ร— Current Price

Portfolio Value

Total Portfolio Value = Sum of Current Values

Portfolio Profit or Loss

Profit/Loss = Current Portfolio Value โˆ’ Total Invested

Portfolio ROI

ROI = (Profit/Loss รท Total Invested) ร— 100

Portfolio Allocation

Allocation % = Holding Value รท Total Portfolio Value ร— 100

Stock Portfolio Calculation Example

Suppose an investor owns:

  • 20 shares of Stock A purchased at $100.
  • 10 shares of Stock B purchased at $200.

The total amount invested would be:

(20 ร— $100) + (10 ร— $200) = $4,000

If Stock A is now worth $120 and Stock B is worth $180:

(20 ร— $120) + (10 ร— $180) = $4,200

The estimated portfolio profit would therefore be:

$4,200 โˆ’ $4,000 = $200

The estimated portfolio ROI would be:

($200 รท $4,000) ร— 100 = 5%

Understanding Stock Portfolio Diversification

Diversification means spreading investments across different assets, companies, industries or other exposures rather than relying entirely on a single investment.

Owning several stocks does not automatically mean that a portfolio is well diversified. If most of the portfolio is concentrated in companies from the same sector or affected by similar economic factors, the investments may still have significant exposure to the same risks.

The allocation section of this calculator can help you see how much of your portfolio is represented by each holding.

Why Portfolio Allocation Matters

Portfolio allocation shows the relative size of each holding. This can help investors identify whether a single stock has become a disproportionately large part of the portfolio.

For example, if one stock represents 60% of a portfolio, changes in that stock can have a significant effect on the overall portfolio value.

Allocation should be considered alongside an investor's objectives, time horizon, diversification strategy and tolerance for risk.

What About Stock Dividends?

This calculator focuses on portfolio value based on invested capital and stock prices. It does not automatically add dividends to the portfolio return calculation.

Dividends can be an important part of total investment returns, particularly for income-focused portfolios.

For dividend analysis, use the Stock Dividend Calculator or Stock Dividend Yield Calculator .

How Fees and Taxes Affect Portfolio Returns

The simplified calculations on this page do not automatically account for every possible commission, brokerage charge, tax, withholding tax or other investment cost.

These costs can reduce actual investment returns.

For a more detailed analysis, investors should use the applicable fee and tax information from their broker, investment platform or tax authority.

Does This Calculator Use Live Stock Prices?

No. This Stock Portfolio Calculator uses the stock prices you enter manually.

It does not connect to a stock exchange, brokerage account or live market-data API.

Before making an investment decision, verify current prices, market conditions and portfolio information through a trusted financial-data source or your broker.

Important Stock Investment Risks

  • Stock prices can rise or fall significantly.
  • Past performance does not guarantee future results.
  • Concentrated portfolios can experience larger losses when major holdings decline.
  • Market gaps can cause actual prices to differ from expected prices.
  • Currency movements can affect international investments.
  • Dividends can be reduced or suspended.
  • Taxes and investment fees can reduce actual returns.
