What Is Stock Investment Return?

Stock investment return measures how much an investment has gained or lost relative to the amount originally invested. A complete return calculation can consider both changes in the stock price and dividends received.

For example, if you purchase shares for $10,000 and their value later increases to $12,500, you have a $2,500 capital gain. If you also received $400 in dividends, your total return before applicable taxes and other adjustments would be $2,900.

Total Return = Capital Gain/Loss + Dividends − Applicable Costs

Stock Return Formulas

Initial Investment

Initial Investment = Number of Shares × Purchase Price

Capital Gain or Loss

Capital Gain/Loss = (Current Price − Purchase Price) × Shares

Dividend Income

Dividend Income = Dividend Per Share × Number of Shares

Total Return

Total Return = Capital Gain/Loss + Dividend Income − Fees

Return on Investment

ROI = (Total Return ÷ Initial Investment) × 100

These formulas provide a simplified estimate. Actual investment returns can be affected by taxes, transaction costs, currency conversion, dividend reinvestment and other factors.

Stock Return Calculation Example

Consider an investor who purchases 100 shares at $100 per share. The stock later rises to $125 per share and the investor receives $4 per share in dividends.

Metric Value
Shares 100
Purchase Price $100
Initial Investment $10,000
Current Price $125
Current Value $12,500
Capital Gain $2,500
Dividends $400
Total Return $2,900
ROI 29%

Price Return vs. Total Return

Price Return

Price return measures the change in the stock's market price without considering dividends.

Price Return = (Current Price − Purchase Price) ÷ Purchase Price × 100

Total Return

Total return considers both the change in the stock price and income received from dividends, along with applicable costs.

For dividend-paying investments, total return can therefore provide a more complete picture of investment performance than price appreciation alone.

What Is Annualized Return?

Annualized return expresses the growth of an investment as an equivalent yearly rate. It is particularly useful when comparing investments held for different lengths of time.

Annualized Return = (Ending Value ÷ Initial Investment) 1 / Years − 1

The calculation assumes compounding and is a simplified estimate when dividends are treated as part of the ending value. It should not be confused with an actual historical performance calculation that accounts for the timing of cash flows.

Why Dividends Matter to Stock Returns

Dividends can represent an important part of the return generated by some stocks. Two investments with identical share-price performance can produce different total returns if their dividend payments differ.

However, dividends are not guaranteed. Companies can increase, reduce, suspend or eliminate dividend payments depending on their financial position and business conditions.

Important: A high dividend payment does not automatically mean an investment is attractive. Consider dividend sustainability, earnings, cash flow, valuation and the overall financial condition of the company.

How Fees and Taxes Affect Stock Returns

Brokerage commissions, exchange fees and other transaction costs can reduce the return you actually receive.

Taxes can also affect the final amount available to an investor. The tax treatment of dividends and capital gains varies by country, investor circumstances and account type.

This calculator allows you to enter total investment fees, but it does not calculate personal taxes.
