Example: Position Size for a $10,000 Prop Firm Account
Suppose you have a $10,000 account, plan to risk 0.5% per trade, use a 20-pip stop-loss and estimate a pip value of $10 per standard lot. Assume no additional costs for this example.
| Item | Example | Calculation |
|---|---|---|
| Risk budget | $50 | $10,000 × 0.5% |
| Risk per 1.00 lot | $200 | 20 pips × $10 |
| Raw position size | 0.25 lots | $50 ÷ $200 |
| Potential target at 1:2 | $100 | $50 × 2 |
| Daily loss limit at 5% | $500 | $10,000 × 5% |
These figures are illustrative. Actual risk can differ because of spread, commission, slippage, currency conversion, contract specifications and execution.
How to Calculate Prop Firm Position Size
The basic position sizing formula is:
Raw lot size = Cash risk budget ÷ (Stop-loss distance × Monetary value per unit per lot)
If your planned risk is $50, the stop-loss distance is 20 pips and each pip is worth $10 per standard lot, the raw position size is 0.25 lots before costs and broker lot restrictions.
1. Choose your risk percentage
Select a percentage that fits your strategy, financial circumstances and the firm's loss limits. A smaller percentage reduces planned cash exposure for the same account balance, stop distance and instrument value, but does not eliminate risk.
2. Set your stop-loss distance
Measure the distance between your entry and stop-loss in the same units used for the monetary value input. For a forex pair this may be pips; for gold or an index CFD, it may be a defined price increment or point.
3. Verify your instrument's value
Monetary value per lot varies with the symbol, contract size, price, account currency and broker. Use your broker's contract specifications or a verified instrument-specific pip value calculator.
4. Account for costs and lot increments
Commissions, spreads and slippage may increase the final loss. The calculator includes an optional cost estimate and rounds the position size down to the lot increment you enter.
5. Respect daily and overall drawdown limits
Leave a buffer below your firm's loss threshold. The daily loss limit may include floating losses, commissions or other items depending on the firm's rules. Overall drawdown may be fixed or trailing, so check the exact reference and reset rules.
Forex, Gold and Funded Account Position Sizing
Forex pairs
For forex trades, pip value depends on the currency pair, position size and account currency. A $10 pip value per standard lot is a common approximation for certain major pairs in a USD account, not a universal value.
Gold (XAUUSD)
Gold contract sizes and quoted price increments vary by broker. Confirm how much a specified gold price movement is worth for one lot. Do not automatically apply a forex pip value to XAUUSD.
Prop firm evaluations
A challenge may specify a daily loss threshold, an overall drawdown threshold, profit targets and additional trading restrictions. Position sizing is only one part of risk management. Always check the current official rulebook.
Why round the position size down?
Rounding down to an allowed lot increment helps keep the calculated exposure within the planned cash risk. If the result is smaller than the broker's minimum permitted trade, skipping the trade or changing the plan may be more appropriate than forcing a larger position.
Frequently Asked Questions
1. What is a prop firm position size calculator?
It estimates trade quantity using your selected capital, risk percentage, stop-loss distance and the monetary value of the selected price movement per lot.
2. How do I calculate lot size for a funded account?
Calculate the cash risk budget, divide it by the loss per standard lot at your stop-loss, then round the result down to a valid broker lot increment. Account for trading costs and your firm's drawdown rules.
3. Can I use this calculator for a $5,000 or $100,000 challenge?
Yes. Enter your own balance or equity, risk percentage, stop distance, instrument value and account restrictions. Always verify the applicable provider rules.
4. Does this calculator work for XAUUSD gold?
Yes, provided you enter the monetary value of your chosen gold price increment for one lot. Gold contract specifications differ between brokers, so confirm your instrument details first.
5. What is the difference between risk percentage and lot size?
Risk percentage describes the planned loss relative to selected capital. Lot size determines the trade quantity. The stop-loss distance and instrument value connect the two.
6. Does the calculator include commissions?
You can enter an estimated round-trip cost per lot. Actual spreads, slippage, overnight fees and currency conversions may still differ from your estimate.
7. Does a smaller position size guarantee that I will pass?
No. Smaller exposure can reduce planned loss for a given stop distance, but market gaps, execution, strategy performance and firm rules still matter. No calculator guarantees challenge success.
8. Is this prop firm calculator free?
Yes. EZTradingHub provides this calculator for free educational planning and risk estimation.
