Position Size Results

Risk amount per trade $50.00
Estimated position size 0.25 lots
Potential target profit $100.00
Target distance 40 pips
Daily loss allowance $500.00
Daily allowance remaining $500.00
Maximum drawdown allowance $1,000.00
Remaining drawdown room $1,000.00
Profit target still required $800.00

Daily Loss Limit Usage

0% of daily limit used.

Enter your account details to review your risk.
Important: Position size is an estimate. Spread, commission, slippage, contract size, currency conversion and broker lot-step rules may change the actual result. Never treat the estimated remaining drawdown as permission to risk the entire amount.

Example: A $10,000 Funded Challenge

Suppose your evaluation account starts at $10,000, your planned risk is 0.5% per trade, your stop-loss is 20 pips and the assumed pip value is $10 per standard lot.

Calculation Example result Meaning
Risk per trade $50 0.5% of $10,000
Estimated position size 0.25 lots $50 รท (20 ร— $10)
Target at 1:2 $100 Before trading costs
Daily loss limit at 5% $500 Assuming a $10,000 reference
Maximum drawdown at 10% $1,000 Assuming a fixed $10,000 reference

This example is illustrative, not a universal prop firm rule. Some firms use equity-based limits, trailing drawdown, different daily reset times or other breach conditions.

How to Use a Prop Firm Risk Calculator

  1. Enter your account balance. Use the original challenge balance and update current equity to reflect your account's present state.
  2. Set your risk percentage. Model the amount you plan to risk if your stop-loss is hit.
  3. Enter the stop-loss distance. Use the distance from entry to stop-loss in pips for the selected forex pair.
  4. Confirm the pip value. Pip value depends on the instrument, trade size and account currency. Do not automatically use $10 for gold, indices, cryptocurrencies or every forex pair.
  5. Enter your firm's drawdown rules. Check the official daily loss and maximum loss definitions, including how floating losses, commissions and overnight positions are treated.
  6. Review the results before trading. The remaining allowance is a risk-control reference, not a recommended amount to lose.

Understanding Prop Firm Drawdown Rules

Daily drawdown

A daily drawdown limit restricts losses over a specified trading day. The reference may be the day's starting balance, starting equity or another amount defined by the provider. The reset time and treatment of floating profit and loss can also differ between firms.

Maximum drawdown

Maximum drawdown is the total loss threshold an account must stay within. Some programs calculate it from the initial balance, while others use a trailing balance or equity threshold. Confirm whether the threshold moves as the account grows or falls.

Position sizing and risk-to-reward

Position sizing estimates how many lots correspond to a chosen cash risk and stop-loss distance. Risk-to-reward compares the planned loss at the stop with the planned profit at the target. A higher ratio does not guarantee a higher win rate or profitable results.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a prop firm risk calculator?

It is a planning tool that estimates cash risk, position size, potential target profit, daily loss allowance and maximum drawdown for a proprietary trading evaluation or funded account.

2. How much should I risk per trade on a funded account?

There is no universally suitable percentage. You can compare different risk settings, consider your strategy's historical losses and leave room for costs and drawdown restrictions. Your firm's rules should take priority.

3. Can I use this calculator for a $5,000 or $100,000 challenge?

Yes. Enter your actual starting balance, current equity, loss thresholds and profit target. Verify the provider's rules before using the estimates.

4. Does this calculator work for gold (XAUUSD)?

The risk formula can be used when the stop distance and monetary value per unit of price movement are correctly expressed. Gold contract specifications differ between brokers. Do not enter a forex pip value unless it matches your gold contract and account currency.

5. Does this calculator guarantee that I will pass?

No. It estimates risk using your inputs. It cannot predict market movements, guarantee profits or ensure that you comply with every challenge rule.

6. Why can my broker's lot size differ from this result?

Pip value, account currency, instrument specifications, lot increments, minimum trade size, spread, commission and slippage can change the effective trade risk. Confirm the contract details with your broker.

7. What is the difference between fixed and trailing drawdown?

A fixed drawdown limit is tied to a defined reference amount. A trailing limit can move according to the firm's rules as the account balance or equity changes. This calculator uses a fixed reference for the overall drawdown estimate.

8. Is this prop firm calculator free?

Yes. The calculator is provided free for educational planning and risk estimation.
