What Is an ETF Profit Calculator?
An ETF Profit Calculator helps investors estimate the potential profit or loss from an exchange-traded fund investment.
It can take into account the number of shares, purchase price, current or selling price, dividends and investment fees.
The calculator can then estimate the capital gain, dividend income, total return and return on investment (ROI).
ETF Profit Formula
Final ETF Value = Number of Shares ร Current/Selling Price
Capital Gain = Final ETF Value โ Initial Investment
Dividend Income = Number of Shares ร Dividend Per Share
Total Return = Capital Gain + Dividend Income โ Fees
ROI = (Total Return รท Initial Investment) ร 100

ETF Profit Calculator Example
Suppose you purchase 10 ETF shares at $100 per share. Your initial investment is therefore $1,000.
If the ETF later rises to $120 per share, the investment is worth $1,200 before considering dividends and fees.
Final Value = 10 ร $120 = $1,200
Capital Gain = $1,200 โ $1,000 = $200
If the ETF also paid $2 per share in dividends, dividend income would be $20 before applicable taxes or other costs.
ETF Total Return vs. Price Return
ETF price return measures the change in the ETF's market price.
Total return can also include distributions such as dividends.
For this reason, an ETF's total return can be different from its simple price change.
Why Dividends Matter
Some ETFs distribute income generated by the securities they hold. Investors may receive these distributions during the investment period.
This calculator allows you to include dividend income when estimating total return.
How ETF Fees Can Affect Returns
Investment costs can reduce the amount an investor ultimately receives.
Depending on the investment and broker, costs may include transaction commissions, spreads, account fees or other expenses.
ETF expense ratios are generally reflected in the fund's performance rather than being separately paid by the investor as a transaction fee. This calculator therefore treats the fee field as an additional user-entered investment cost.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is ETF profit calculated?
ETF profit can be estimated by combining the change in investment value with dividends received and then subtracting applicable fees.
How is ETF ROI calculated?
ROI is calculated by dividing the estimated total return by the initial investment and multiplying the result by 100.
Do dividends count as ETF profit?
Dividends can form part of an investor's total return. Whether they should be considered realized profit depends on the investor's accounting approach and whether the dividends were received or reinvested.
